Day 186 - The Cupboards

I really thought we would be running on empty this far into the Challenge.  But as you can see there are still lots of things left in the cupboards.

True there's more space than there used to be, and things seem very neat and tidy.  It is no longer such a faff to find elusive ingredients amongst things we simply don't use.

And it's easy to see recent purchases even in the mess that is the baking cupboard.

I'm liking the space that we are slowly getting back.

Today is a No Spend Day

  1. I'm interested in your scoring for the films you've seen, can I ask if the score was based on your husband's opinions of the films too or are they just your scores? If they are your scores where there any films that your husband liked more than you?

    1. We do usually talk about what scores we would each give the film as we leave the cinema, and usually it's pretty close, but the scores listed here are purely mine.

The only film that we really disagreed over was 'The Big Short'. Lovely Hubby would have given it an 8/10 I gave it 4/10 ..... maybe if it hadn't sent me to sleep it would have got more!!

  2. I'm still struggling a bit with the pantry...it seems I eat more from the fridge...the pantry is "just in case." I seem to never eat from there, though...Good job with yours!

    1. We definitely eat more from the fridge too. This is one of the reasons for this years Challenge, in future I can just keep stocked in the cupboards the things we actually eat and not all the 'bargains' I have tended to stock up on in the past.

  3. I should really get my ass in year and do a challenge, I can't open the cupboard without it nearly falling out, I just can't resist a bargain that's my trouble x

    2. I have decided I will do a challenge but I will wait until a new month begins and then set up another blog for it. It will just be to do with food and the grocery budget.

  4. I'd done so well on my cupboards, got down to 'reasonable and to be expected' amounts of stored stuff but then out of the blue, found out I need major abdominal op so will be out of action re driving/shopping/cooking etc for several weeks. Am now just doing massive online shop that will involve stocking up the cupboards with everything I can possibly think I might need for that time. Luckily I have friends who can fetch in fresh stuff but I don't really want to be asking them to bring in tins, bottles of water, cartons of juice, bleach etc. I know I'll use it all eventually but my cupboards were looking so neat and tidy .............

    1. Sorry to hear this :-(

I hope all goes well. This is when online shopping really is a godsend isn't it. Disappointing that you have to 'clutter' up your cupboards again, but needs must and once you are over the operation you will be able to see what you have left and get back to neat and tidy.

      Good luck xx

    2. Well that series with Greg Wallace and the grocer man is coming back to tv next week, the one where they go into families who spend thousands a year on food bills, throw masses away etc. However stocked up I'll be, at least it will be stuff I'll use up eventually and it won't be thrown away.

  5. I've done well with using up everything that I had in the freezer (just started a bit of a restock but not going overboard) and I'm still working on my pantry. I'm ashamed to say that I did find some items this past week that were so far past their expiry date that I did have to throw them out - I'm blaming the fact that I don't eat as many carbs so items that I used with carbs just haven't been used. I'm going to go through there again this week and if there are items that are getting close then I'm going to pass them along to a couple of friends who live downstairs - No More Waste!

    1. Don't beat yourself up about a one off throw out, we all get caught out sometimes. It's the folk that overbuy week in week out that are the main food wastage culprits. I bet your friends will be thrilled to receive a bit of 'free' food.

  6. Love a good cupboard picture! Glad you're discovering the joy of being able to find the things you want, rather than searching behind unloved and abandoned ingredients. I'm trying not to let unwanted items creep back in, after my storecupboard challenges, but feel another focused effort is due.

    1. Haha ... you can't beat a bit of 'food cupboard porn' can you. It's time we got to see inside your cupboards again!!
