Day 113 - Wants and Needs

I need to really concentrate on wants versus needs so much more this year.  I keep slipping and spending what little money I have on things that really I could manage without.

We have all sorts of things in the freezer that could so easily take the place of the things I am buying.  Luckily I have more fresh stuff coming on in the polytunnel now and  that will soon stop me from having to buy salad stuff.

I'm starting to wonder if I could go a whole month without buying anything except milk ... it would do my budget the world of good.

Maybe a No Spend May could be on the cards!!

Today is a No Spend Day

  1. This is really a comment on saving jam from your post yesterday.
We have just eaten (and lived to tell the tale) a jar of homemade jam dated 2009.
As long as it has been put into jars when boiling hot and sealed with a lid immediately my jam, marmalade etc lasts for years!
Occasionally there is a trace of mould but I just lift it off and we eat the rest.
No one has ever shown any signs of suffering ill effects . We are a pretty healthy family.
I think your idea of saving the extra jam is an excellent one. Sue

  2. I to get tempted to buy what I don't need even though I have a list. It will be interesting to see if you can have a no spend May.

  3. Have you ever thought about keeping goats? Lovely, funny creatures that produce lots of lovely milk as well! (If you like goats milk, that is ! :) )

  4. Not to sound too New Age, but what you are doing essentially, while it involves money and saving, also speaks to being more aware of what you consume and how and making more conscious choices. So much of what people do stems from habits they do not question. I think it is worth raising the points you do about balancing needs and wants. You are doing well with this challenge if it is leading to these considerations. I'm interested to see what a no spend month is like for you both.

  5. I've been looking at Pomana's International Pectin on Amazon. You can made jelly, jam , marmalade with some or no sugar. It has good reviews. I don't know how it would work out cost wise vs sugar. You get three boxes and each box makes 2-4 batches, probably depending on how big the batch is.

  6. I need a low spend May so that I can put more money towards the credit card bill which has funded the decking etc.
